Word Study

This year, students will participate in word study activities in the classroom. Current research confirms that weekly spelling tests do not improve spelling performance.  Students will be assessed on spelling progress upon completion of instruction of spelling patterns following the Words Their Way program matching their level of development . Also, we will be monitoring their progress by checking to see students are applying the knowledge of how words work in their everyday writing.

Students will be given a list of high priority spelling words as they are introduced. These are words most commonly found in the English language and we encourage practice of these at home for spelling fluency and automaticity. Many of these words require memorization of spelling because it does not follow a typical spelling pattern.
